Oops, I did it again!

I seem to start many of my posts with an apology of why I haven’t updated for a while. This one will be no different. Although I do feel like I have a corker of a good reason. I have torn the ligaments in my knee rather badly and have been in a full leg brace for several weeks. Sadly, this is not the first time this has happened. I am beginning to believe that “Oops, I did it again” should be my personal catchphrase.

Oops, I did it again!

I first tore the ligament in my right knee 15 years ago. It happened due to an accident at work where I fell heavily onto a concrete floor. The rest, as they say, is history. It tore again a few years later playing on the Wi Fit. Both times I had intensive physio and spent some time on crutches. The ligament must be very weak now and my knee has had several minor tears since. 6 weeks ago I took it to another level.

I was only walking down the stairs when it happened. I never slipped, twisted or fell: I just took a step forward. There was an audible pop and my knee felt as if it had been ripped in two. Several hours later in A&E I was given a full leg brace and a referral to the fracture clinic.

Oops, I did it again!

Hip Hip Hooray

Life since has been a whirlwind of hospital appointments and not much else. My ongoing hip problems are complicating the situation. I am on the waiting list for hip surgery but the operation will involve putting huge pressure on my knee due to the incredible amount of traction needed to separate the joints. The orthopedic surgeon is reluctant to do this while my knee is so unstable. Currently my 2 consultants are battling it out as to what gets sorted first. I need another MRI (seriously surprised I don’t glow in the dark by now) to clarify the situation.

It’s a marathon not a sprint

What can I say except there will be no easy fix here. My knee may heal without intervention given more time. However, it is very likely to happen again in the future. The novelty of sitting with your feet up all day soon wears thin but thankfully I have been given a smaller, hinged brace that I can use as I feel stronger. We are going away in a few weeks and I am sure that that will bring with it new challenges. I am keen to look ahead to a future without crutches and without pain but have to be realistic about time frames here. There is an end in sight and I have to be positive that I will get there eventually. In the meantime I shall sit on the couch and drink tea…

Thank you, I fear there will be no quick solution here, short of putting them in a boxing ring and winner decides what course to take!

Sending you warm positive thoughts for your healing. Take care and don’t push to do too much too fast. Sometimes the body needs time.
