Circus fun at Hatton Adventure World

During the February half term we were invited to Hatton Adventure World to see if we enjoyed their circus themed activities. To be honest the children were thrilled about the visit until I mentioned clowns. They all have an irrational fear of the red nosed freaks (which I share). I thought it might be a good way to help us them get over this fear. We have been there a few times before and have always had a good time. I was confident that we could make a success of this visit and enjoy the circus fun on offer.

Brrr, it’s cold outside

Wow, what can I say except that we visited on the coldest day of the holidays. Hindsight would have informed us that the beast from the east was imminent and we would definitely have worn extra layers!

Our first port of call was to feed the animals.

Feeding the goats at Hatton The goats were a huge success

Handling the guinea pigs

Handling the guinea pigs was popular with everyone. Bobbins and Mr M would love a pet guinea pig but I have put my foot down and refused. They are adorable little critters but I don’t want the extra responsibility at the moment.

After seeing the animals we spent some time in the park. Some of the outdoor facilities were unavailable. I’m not sure if this was due to the time of the year or the weather. It was so cold though, that we didn’t spend too long outside so didn’t mind so much.

Circus fun!

After lunch we made our way to a huge circus tent that had been erected. The Cirque Normandie were performing. I was excited until I saw some clowns at the entrance when I actually started to panic a little. Pulling myself together, I made like I was fine and tried not to let it show to the children.

The show itself exceeded my expectations. The clowns were actually pretty funny and I could see from their faces that the children were enjoying it too. Acts included a fabulous juggler and a comical ‘lion’.

Aerial artistThe aerial artist was Peanut’s favourite. She performed without a net which was very brave.

Limbo dancingThe acrobats also did a super limbo challenge, complicated by fire!

Circus clown

It was hard to get good photos inside the tent but there were plenty of photo opportunities afterwards. However, despite enjoying the show the children could not be persuaded to have their pictures taken with the clowns!

We had a fantastic time enjoying the circus fun available at Hatton during half term despite the cold temperatures.  I cannot say, hand on heart, that the children are totally over their clown phobias but their feelings are now much more positive. I may even see them in a new light myself!

During Easter they will have different activities available and hopefully much more clement weather!

I haven’t been to a circus for years.. I’m with you on the clown front. I’m glad the children enjoyed it. One step along the way to conquering their fear.#MMBC

It seems that clowns are a very common fear and I think the media does feed into it and that doesn’t help matters. I think clowns need a PR firm to try and change their public image!!

What a fab day out. I haven’t been to Hatton before, so perhaps we should put it on our ‘places to visit’ list.
There is something creepy about clowns isn’t there?! I remember me and one of my best mates being terrified after watching IT as kids! They don’t bother me now, but my friend still hates the sight of them.

Thanks for sharing with #MMBC. Have a lovely weekend x

I have never seen IT myself but all the images have obviously affected me as well as all the villains wearing clown masks in films.
You should definitely visit Hatton if you get the chance, especially if you go on a sunny day x

Clowns are quite sinister aren’t they? I’m not keen on them either. The circus looks like was great though and it sounds like you had a wonderful time. My girls would have loved the guinea pigs as well – I’m the same when it comes to not being ready for the responsibility of a pet at the moment though! #countrykids

I think the children truly believe they will take care of new pets but I know from experience they only want the fun parts and I will be the one ending up doing all the cleaning out and feeding!

I haven’t been to see a circus for years… actually not since I was a young kid myself. Loved it then, but now I’m not so sure. And I’m not all that keen on clowns either ? Looks like you all had a good day out though, despite the cold! ?x #CountryKids

I think modern circuses are much better, they don’t have animals so are much more ethical than ones from years ago

Hi Louisa, clowns are creepy things. The day I realised my son was petrified of clowns was at a birthday party when he was about three, he was right on the other side of the room and we were separated by the clown. It was a very sad moment for me and him… Hatton looks a fun place to visit. A petting zoo is always fun (you’d never get me out of there) and I love watching bendy acrobats too.

The children didn’t used to be bothered by them until some idiots started jumping out at people in our town, while dressed up. I don’t think all the adverts for the new IT film helped either!

This looks amazing! Do you know T has never ever been to see a circus? Would love to take her to one. Hopefully we’ll find one in our area 🙂 #countrykids

I like the idea of a little mini petting zoo before a circus, that’s cute. Looks like a fun time despite the cold. I’m glad the clowns weren’t too scary in the end, but I don’t think I’d want my photo taken with one either!

There are always plenty of seasonal activities so it’s well worth revisiting

  15. Great to read that you and your children enjoyed the day despite your clown phobia. I’ve always been a huge fan of circus arts and I would love to be able to take my gang to such a performance.

They were very talented and made it look effortless

  16. 10th March 2018 / 11:45 AM

What a wonderful activity for the kids, Hatton really does have something going on all year round to encourage the kids to have different adventures. It’s wonderful that you and the kids all faced your fears of the clowns, they can be creepy at times but in general I’m not too bothered by them. I bet the kids love being able to cuddle the guinea pigs, especially since they’re not able to have one at home.

Thanks for sharing your fun at the circus with me on #CountryKids.

I am a big fan of Hatton and we often visit at Christmas when it’s really cold. There is always something fun to do there though. The circus looks amazing.
