A short respite

Hooray, the children are finally back at school! I have struggled somewhat with them this holiday due to my knee injury. However, we did manage to have a lovely break away in Somerset and do some exploring so all was not lost. The holidays have been crazy busy. So much has happened that I don’t feel like I’ve had time to draw breath. We have huge plans on the horizon so I am very much in need of a short respite. Here’s a little catch up and a hint of things to come.

I’m exhausted!

Emotionally and physically it has been hard to run my teenager fight club for 6 weeks. Who knew there were so many things a child could argue about? If 4 children is not enough, there have been sleepovers galore and a self emptying fridge to contend with.

OJ’s friends don’t even knock when they come in anymore and have frightened the life out of me on more than one occasion. Last night a complete stranger walked into the lounge by mistake at 10pm. He was as surprised as us, thinking he had walked into the wrong house. OJ and his friends were in the next room laughing uncontrollably at the error.

There have been many changes on the home front. Mr M took delivery of the biggest shed known to mankind. The garden has also seen a mini makeover whereby we painted the fences and created new flower beds. The hallway has been partially plastered. The master bedroom redecorated. Glitter paint added to B’s bedroom walls and the bathroom painted. Phew! It is never ending when you are renovating. Expect many interior style posts in the upcoming weeks!

Drinking a cup of tea, reading and relaxingPhoto by Anthony Tran  It is obviously not me, there is no clunky, ugly knee brace!

A short respite

And by short I mean very short. The children’s return to school/college has left me with 3 days of peace to recharge my batteries before the weekend. We have a tiny window to get all half finished jobs completed before the next big project starts. We will no doubt spend the weekend decorating (as ever).

I plan to spend my time relaxing, drinking tea, having bubble baths and indulging myself. How that will pan out is anyone’s guess, since today I have spent my time hoovering, ironing and cleaning. However, tomorrow is a new day and I see a little afternoon nap in my diary to counteract the housework. As an introvert, I really need these few days of silence and self indulgence because on Monday that will all change…

A big project

We are starting our loft extension!. We did not expect to be able to do the work this year so it’s a wonderful surprise to be able to put our plans into action.  I am excited for 2 further rooms, especially since Junior moving into the loft leaves the main bedroom empty. It won’t be empty for long though. It is earmarked to be my very own craft room! Eek. A dream come true.

I am less excited about potentially 4 months of builders and various other tradesmen. I don’t do mornings and I don’t do mess. Hmmm. I expect I will become frustrated by the noise and intrusion and the constant cups of tea I will be brewing. My hip surgery is expected towards the end of the build so the rest of the year is going to be manic. That is why my short respite is so important. I really need a rest. Now if I can only stop ironing for long enough to start…

The things they can find to argue over never ceases to amaze me!

we’ve got 4 boys and oh my holidays were a nightmare, the house was always full of their mates, but they took over the whole house, with Peter and I usually left with only the kitchen or our bedroom to go in #pocolo

That is part of the reason for the loft conversion, one of the rooms will be somewhere else for them to go (and get from under my feet!)

Sometimes it is good to rest and take it easy – helps the mind and body. I hope you feel refreshed soon X #wotw

I had to laugh at the beginning of this post. Our 19 year old currently doesn’t live with us, but I remember constantly being amazed at the things she was able to disagree with us about. It was almost like she was trying to argue sometimes. We both miss her terribly, but there is no denying that its a lot quieter around here now #thatfridaylinky

I know the feeling that they just want a row and aren’t too concerned what it is about!

I am the same, Louisa. I am so tired after the holidays and trying to work from home and also keep the children busy. I hope you get to rest and recover now they are back to school. (I wanted to go to the gym this week in my spare time but I was so tired!). The loft plans sound exciting. I would love a bit more room in our house 🙂 #pocolo

I think if we didn’t have the prospect of more rooms I would have moved into a hotel for a while to get a break (only half joking)

Omg a craft room, Louisa this is soooo exciting. I was hoping for one if we moved house, but now we are thinking of taking the house of the market and changing our house, but that means no craft room. Ha ha I have a self emptying fridge too it comes with the territory doesn’t it? WE spend a small fortune on food and yet apparently we never have any good food, Hope your knee is on the mend soon x

Maybe you could get a she-shed? That would’ve been my alternative to a dedicated room. We are seriously considering getting a lock on the fridge. We bought all the sandwich box snacks for them all for a week and they are all scoffed within a day. Where do they put all this food? x

I am from a big family. Teenager fight club is what I see almost every day as there is a stream of teenagers in my family. Nasty especially when they are bigger than you and you wouldn’t want to be in the middle of the fight anymore.

Sounds like you are going to be busy. Hope everything will go as planned =)

Fortunately they are not nasty, just noisy and always hungry!

hehehe! The teenager fight club line did make me chuckle. I have a tween and a teen and some of the things they argue about is ridiculous.
The renovating sounds very exciting. I love the sound of Glitter paint. Good luck with the loft extension. I hope you get the chance to relax and unwind… #WotW

You were in Somerset and you didn’t tell me? We could have met up. Hope you had a great time. Enjoy your respite. Very much sympathize with months of dust and builders. At least you’ll gain two rooms. We had builders repointing our place for weeks and still the dust was invasive and no real gain. Bubble bath seems a good idea. #wotw

Darn it! I wish I had known we were so close.
One of the first jobs we had done was repointing so I understand the frustration. Everything looks the same when the work is finished so you have no grand reveal!

So busy, I’m glad you managed a few days respite. It’s always manic having work done on your house but so worth it in the end. I remember having new central heating and re-wiring done in my old house when I was 8 months pregnant. I so just wanted to chill, but there were builders every day. You just have to keep your eye on the end result, which I’m sure will be amazing.

Having work done when heavily pregnant must have really tested your nerves! I hope work and my surgery don’t clash, that will be very testing but well worth it eventually

Oh my, you have so much going on! The loft sounds brilliant, and resulting in your own craft room will be wonderful. Just focus on that calm respite over the next few months of chaos! Hope you manage to get a little rest and that nap x Thanks for sharing with #WotW

Oh hun you do sound busy. I have to say that after an insane six weeks in Orlando I am glad to be back with the kids at school so that I can sit in the quiet in my office and type. It’s been a long time! Hope all goes well for you. xx

I am not sure if a six week holiday is amazing or insane or somewhere in between! You must be exhausted x

I can completely relate to the need for space and quiet. I’m an introvert too and value days away from people so much, especially after busy periods. Your house is going to be manic and messy for a while, no doubt, but hopefully the builders keep their site tidy…maybe with a bit of encouragement…and you’ll have a wonderful new space at the end of it! Looking forward to seeing the interior posts 🙂

It can be hard to understand the need for solitude if you are not an introvert but it sounds like we are on the same page. Thankfully our builders are pretty good at taking their rubbish away but the dust gets everywhere and lingers in the air for ages. At least it will give me something to blog about though!
